Inflammation of the bile ducts can have various causes, such as blockage or narrowing of the bile ducts, but also tumours. To clarify the cause, an endoscopic examination method known as ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is usually carried out, in which a special endoscope is advanced via the stomach into the bile ducts. Bile is also extracted as part of this examination.
